Vitamin B Linked to Breakouts

B vitamins are essential for your skin health, however if you are not truly deficient in B12, adding extra can actually cause skin irritation and breakouts. This is not only for those who are acne prone, but also for those who otherwise have clear skin!

We all have a strain of acne-causing bacteria on our skin called Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes for short. According to a new study published in Science Translational Medicine, B12 supplements have been shown to alter P. acnes growth on the skin. Under normal circumstances, P. acnes does no harm, but when its activity is changed on the skin, there is an inflammatory response – leading to acne.

Supplements and injections providing B12 seem to contain unusually high amounts of the vitamin. For example, the average female adult requires 2.4-2.8 mcg per day, but if you check the label of many B12 supplements, you’ll notice that they can contain up to of 2,000 mcg per dose!

It’s this excess of B12 that changes the p. acnes activity on the skin- leading to breakouts. It’s important to get your vitamin levels tested by your doctor before supplementing as it can cause more harm than good.

Another reason B12 supplements seem to trigger acne is that most versions found in stores are synthetic. When we take these synthetic vitamins, our bodies are left with toxins that must be eliminated by the liver.

The health of your skin is a reflection of the health of your internal organs, but your skin is also a detoxification organ! So if your liver is filled with toxins to be filtered out, they may start coming out through your skin. This will also lead to clogged pores and breakouts!
