Vitamin D for Skin Health

Vitamin D plays a huge role in skin health, however it is quite common to be deficient in this essential vitamin. Talk to your doctor about testing your levels and determining the best approach to increasing your daily intake, if necessary.

Generally, taking dietary supplements and consuming foods rich in Vitamin D are the best ways to increase your Vitamin D levels. While getting sunlight for 15 to 20 minutes per day is also a good and simple way to improve your Vitamin D intake, prolonged sunbathing isn't recommended due to the sun's role in aging the skin and more importantly, skin cancer.

What sets Vitamin D apart from other vitamins is that Vitamin D is actually considered a hormone and is produced by your skin through sunlight exposure. When your Vitamin D levels are low, your other hormones become imbalanced, which will increase oil production in the skin, and ultimately, cause acne.

Regarding your skin’s appearance, Vitamin D is important because it helps reduce excess oil production by regulating hormones and suppressing sebaceous gland activity. It also decreases overactive cell turnover. Basically, Vitamin D keeps your pores from getting clogged with dead skin cells!

Additionally, Vitamin D boosts your immune system and stimulates your cells to help them fight off infection. This will result in decreases of inflammation and infection in the skin! The severity of your acne will become reduced and the healing time of existing acne lesions will be improved.

Lastly, Vitamin D has antioxidant properties, which will protect the skin from free radicals and oxidation that cause fine lines and wrinkles!
