Why "Spot Treatments" Are Not the Best Option for Your Pimples

Updated: Feb 28, 2019

We are seeing more and more people using these little pink lotions as an “acne spot treatment” and it’s making us cringe! Here’s why…

#1 It’s DRYING. One of the most important rules for treating acne is NOT to over dry your skin. Doing this will lead to micro tears and/or stripping the skin’s protective barrier - allowing bacteria to get in, making matters even worse!

#2 These popular spot treatments boast the active ingredient Salicylic Acid. This acid has a large particle size, making it unable to deeply penetrate the skin. While we love a good Salicylic product for preventing future breakouts because of its exfoliating properties, most spot treatment formulations really only dry out the surface of the skin…providing temporary relief or causing further irritation.

If you are seeking a long-term solution for your breakouts, we do not recommend using these spot treatments. Instead, use a daily exfoliating product over the whole face. This will keep the pores clear, prevent future breakouts, and lighten any marks left behind.

If you are prone to blackheads, whiteheads and/or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, we recommend a product with both Salicylic AND Glycolic Acid. Salicylic Acid will break up the oil and dead skin while the Glycolic Acid will dissolve the debris left behind.

*Our favorite is the Jan Marini Bioclear Lotion. Great for all skin types. (Contains Glycolic, Salicylic, and Azeleic acid).

If you are prone to larger cystic pimples or nodules, we recommend a micronized Benzoyl Peroxide product. This will oxygenate the follicles and kill the acne bacteria. Micronized particles will allow the product to penetrate deep into the skin, stopping pimples before they start and killing any existing acne lesions.

*Our favorite is the Jan Marini Benzoyl Peroxide 5% and 10%. This formulation of highly micronized benzoyl peroxide and specialized emollients delivers maximum results with minimal dryness & irritation.

We are not completely opposed to spot treatments, but proper skin maintenance requires treating the whole face, not waiting for a blemish to appear.
